April is Occupational Therapy Month!
Happy OT month! Every April, occupational therapists are highlighted and celebrated for the meaningful impact they have on their clients’ lives. At Aspire Therapy, our OTs are dedicated to using a play-centered, strengths-based approach when working with each child. We promote fun and family involvement, as each of these are critical to making progress towards the child’s goals.
Occupational therapists are trained to look at the whole child. This can include fine and gross motor skills such as coordination and grasp, to visual-perceptual skills, or executive functioning skills like attention and emotional regulation, as well as sensory integration and strength. Unique to occupational therapists is their ability to analyze activities and environments, and provide recommendations on modifications or adaptations to better support a child’s participation.
Our OTs work with clients of a variety of neurotypes, and celebrate the differences and strengths each child presents with. Aspire’s occupational therapists pride themselves on incorporating the child’s interests into their sessions, so it’s not uncommon to see hand-drawn Pokemon cards or Bluey-themed scavenger hunts on a typical day at Aspire!
Some people like to say that occupational therapists put the FUN in function! We love to celebrate those big and small victories with our clients and their families, whether it is learning how to button a shirt, write one’s name, or tie their shoes!
Help us celebrate our great team of OTs here at Aspire - Megan, Emily, Heidi, Kelly, Jessi, Tessa, Lexi, Bethany - if you see any of them around the clinic, wish them a happy OT month!
